Australian Para Equestrian Team Shines at Dream Venue Versailles

The Australian Para Equestrian Team has showcased exceptional talent and determination at the prestigious venue of Versailles. Stella Barton, a Grade 1 rider with cerebral palsy, embarked on her Paralympic journey inspired by the prospect of competing against the backdrop of Versailles at the Paris 2024 Games. Supported by her coach Sally Francis OAM, Barton’s dedication and hard work paid off as she clinched the eighth position in the Individual Grade IV Event with a remarkable score of 70.833% riding her trusted horse, Lord Larmarque, affectionately known as Bug.

Barton’s journey to Versailles was further enriched by the generosity of three-time Paralympian Sharon Jarvis, who lent her horse Bug to Barton. Recognizing the symbiotic relationship between rider and horse in equestrian events, Barton emphasized the pivotal role of the horse’s movement in the competition. Her performance not only secured a spot in the individual freestyle event but also exemplified the spirit of camaraderie and support within the Australian Paralympic Equestrian team.

The Australian team, comprising inspiring athletes like Dianne Barnes, Bridget Murphy, and Lisa Martin, embodies the ethos of teamwork and mutual encouragement. Barnes, a Grade IV rider battling Parkinson’s and dystonia, expressed her joy at sharing the Paralympic experience with her close friend Barton. As Barnes gears up for her retirement after Paris, she remains committed to the sport by assuming the role of Athlete Representative on Equestrian Australia’s Para Dressage Committee, aiming to advocate for athletes’ interests and welfare.

Barnes’ sentiments reflect the team’s collective aspiration to perform at their best while fostering a supportive environment for each member. The Australian Para Equestrian Team’s journey at Versailles symbolizes resilience, friendship, and a shared passion for equestrian sports. As the team continues to compete with dedication and sportsmanship, their presence at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games serves as a testament to the unwavering spirit of para equestrian athletes.
