Equestrian Facility Seeks Community Support for Year-Round Services

An equestrian facility at Merricks Station Grounds is rallying community support to construct a roof over one of its arenas, aiming to facilitate year-round equestrian services on the peninsula. The initiative, led by Jenny Moore, seeks to overcome previous setbacks and cost issues that have hindered the project’s progress. Originally proposed in the shire’s 2015 masterplan, the endeavor was delayed due to unforeseen challenges, including the impact of the pandemic.

Moore, chairperson of the Merricks/Red Hill Station Ground Equestrian Reserve Inc, emphasizes the necessity of the roof to enhance the facility’s offerings, dispelling the misconception that equestrianism is an elitist pursuit. The project, estimated at $1.2 million by the club, has already secured a substantial portion of the required funds through community contributions but requires further assistance to reach the target amount.

The covered arena is envisioned to provide a secure and weather-resistant space for equestrian activities, benefiting various local clubs and individual riders who utilize the Merricks facilities. With multiple sand arenas, turf areas, and specialized training grounds, the site serves as a vital hub for equestrian enthusiasts across different disciplines. Notably, the equestrian community significantly contributes to the peninsula’s economy, underscoring the broader impact of supporting such initiatives.

To expedite the construction process, the group aims to commence building by January/February of the following year, highlighting the urgency of garnering additional support. Tax-deductible donations can be made through the Australian Sports Foundation, with direct debit contributions also accepted. Substantial contributions exceeding $100,000 offer special benefits, while businesses are encouraged to explore sponsorship opportunities for meaningful engagement with the project.

The collaborative effort to raise the necessary funds reflects a shared commitment to promoting equestrian sports and fostering community participation. By engaging stakeholders and leveraging community goodwill, the Merricks Station Grounds project exemplifies the spirit of grassroots initiatives aimed at enhancing local recreational facilities. As the campaign gains momentum, the hope is that a fully roofed arena will not only benefit current riders but also inspire future generations to embrace the joys of equestrian pursuits.
