Danish Equestrian Federation Enhances Guidelines for Ethical Horse Use

The Danish Equestrian Federation is taking proactive steps to address concerns over horse welfare by developing updated guidelines for the ethical and professional use of horses in sports. This initiative comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny following Operation X and increased media coverage in Scandinavia.

The Federation, recognizing the importance of ensuring the well-being of horses involved in sports, announced the launch of a project named “Together for Horse Welfare” on March 5, 2025. This project aims to revise the existing guidelines to promote a unified and ethical approach towards horse usage in sports.

Kimi Gerd Nielsen, Chairman of the Danish Equestrian Federation, emphasized the need for stricter expectations and guidelines regarding horse utilization in sports. The Federation’s 2025 Sports Plan outlines a commitment to enhancing the treatment and evaluation of horses during training and competition.

To ensure the guidelines are comprehensive and well-informed, the Federation will collaborate with researchers, veterinary professionals, and riding experts. By drawing on a diverse range of expertise, including scientific research and practical experience, the Federation aims to establish a robust foundation for the ethical handling of horses in sports.

The initial phase of the guideline update will focus on key areas such as head-neck positioning and behavioral indicators, with external experts working independently to provide unbiased insights. Concurrently, the Federation plans to engage in a dialogue with various stakeholders in the equestrian community through regional meetings scheduled for the spring of 2025. This inclusive approach seeks to foster a shared understanding and acceptance of ethical horse use practices within the sport.

The Federation’s proactive stance aligns with broader efforts to promote responsible horse management and address concerns raised by recent events in the equestrian world. By prioritizing horse welfare and soliciting input from experts and stakeholders, the Danish Equestrian Federation aims to set a new standard for ethical horse use in sports.
