Canadian equestrian rider Eric Lamaze, who clinched the Olympic gold in 2008, has recently faced a significant setback in his career. Lamaze has been handed a ban from the sport until 2031 following a doping violation, marking his second four-year suspension. The Court of Arbitration for Sport was responsible for imposing this latest ban, which was a consequence of Lamaze evading a doping control in the Netherlands in 2021, according to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

This ruling dictates that Lamaze will not commence serving his ban until September 2027, upon the completion of a previous four-year ban issued by the FEI. The FEI disclosed that during the CAS proceedings, Lamaze had submitted falsified medical documents, leading to the additional ineligibility period. Known for his remarkable achievements, Lamaze secured individual gold and team silver in jumping at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and an individual bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. Despite his successes, Lamaze’s career has been marred by controversies, as he missed the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and 2000 Sydney Olympics due to previous incidents involving positive tests for cocaine.

At 56 years old now, Lamaze will be 63 by the time his current bans come to an end. In addition to the ban, Lamaze has been fined 15,000 Swiss francs ($16,500) and directed to pay 12,000 Swiss francs ($13,000) towards the FEI’s legal expenses, along with the costs related to the arbitration case. Prior to this setback, Lamaze had been appointed as the technical adviser and head of national jumping teams by Equestrian Canada in 2022.
