Hawaii County Proposes Free Entry for Keiki and Kūpuna at Panaewa Recreational Complex

The Hawaii County has organized a public hearing to review proposed changes to the regulations governing the Panaewa Recreational Complex. This gathering is scheduled for 5 p.m. on June 3 at the Aging and Disability Resource Center on Kinoole Street. The revisions encompass adjustments to the fee structures for both the Panaewa Zoo and Equestrian Center.

The alterations aim to make the zoo more accessible to county residents by exempting admission charges for children and seniors. Mayor Kimo Alameda expressed the need for fairness in the fee system, leading to the suspension of the previous proposal. The new structure includes free entry for keiki and kūpuna, with the introduction of an annual pass.

Mayor Alameda highlighted the importance of these fees in funding future projects, exhibits, and programs that would enhance the zoo’s offerings and ensure its sustainability as a community space. Panaewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens stands out as the sole zoo set within a tropical rainforest, housing 82 species and nearly 300 animals, along with recreational amenities like a playground and petting zoo.

Non-county residents would be charged $12 for adults, $5 for keiki aged 3-17, and free entry for keiki aged 0-2. An annual pass is available for $25 per individual.
