Galway Downs Set to Host 2028 Olympic Equestrian Events

Galway Downs in California is on track to become the host for the Equestrian and Para Equestrian events at the 2028 Olympics. The LA28 Olympic Organizing Committee’s proposal to select Galway Downs as the venue for these competitions gained significant momentum recently. The Ad Hoc Olympic and Paralympic Committee of the Los Angeles City Council gave unanimous approval to LA28’s proposal to have six venues outside the city limits host various sports competitions, with Galway Downs designated for the Equestrian events.

The decision to consider Galway Downs as an Olympic venue was part of the amendments made to the 2028 Games’ venue master plan, first announced in June 2024. Following the local committee’s approval, the proposal was subsequently ratified by the entire Los Angeles City Council. Final confirmation from the International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board is anticipated in the coming weeks.

Galway Downs’ journey to potentially host the Olympic Equestrian events began around four years ago when the venue started investing significantly in its infrastructure, safety measures, and overall hospitality. These improvements positioned Galway Downs as a strong candidate to meet the IOC’s criteria of sustainability, legacy creation, and financial prudence in venue selection. Additionally, the venue’s capability to accommodate all three equestrian disciplines aligns well with the IOC’s evolving requirements.

The recent ownership transition to Ken and Tina Smith, along with the leadership of Robert Kellerhouse in the equestrian domain, has further solidified Galway Downs’ reputation as a host for international equestrian competitions. The contributions of Ali and Francie Nilforushan have also been pivotal in enhancing the venue’s appeal, particularly through their innovative hunter/jumper events that have garnered international recognition.

Galway Downs, situated in the picturesque Temecula Valley, has embraced the theme of “A Legend Reborn” across its sprawling 242-acre property. Ken Smith, a prominent figure in the local tourism scene, envisions the Olympic Equestrian events as a unifying force within the equestrian community, fostering collaboration across different disciplines. The hosting of these prestigious competitions marks the initial phase of a broader initiative to establish Temecula Valley as a permanent hub for equestrian activities, countering the declining access to horse-related opportunities in many regions.

As preparations progress, stakeholders are encouraged to stay updated on the latest developments through Galway Downs’ official channels, including their website, social media platforms, and the Galway Gazette newsletter. The potential selection of Galway Downs as the venue for the 2028 Olympic Equestrian events signifies a significant milestone in the venue’s evolution and the broader equestrian landscape in the region.
