China is gearing up for a series of international equestrian events this year to elevate the sport’s popularity within the nation. The Chinese Equestrian Association, in collaboration with the International Equestrian Federation, is set to kick off the 2025 FEI Jumping World Cup China League season with competitions in Beijing and Wuhan. These events aim not only to attract global riders but also to nurture local talent through contests like the FEI Jumping World Challenge in Dongguan.
Recent reforms in China’s equestrian sector have led to commendable performances by Chinese athletes on the international stage. While the Paris 2024 Olympics saw room for improvement, the Hangzhou Asian Games showcased the prowess of the Chinese team, particularly under the leadership of star rider Alex Hua Tian. Hua’s achievements, including an eighth-place finish at the Rio 2016 Olympics, have significantly bolstered equestrianism in China, sparking a wave of enthusiasm among the youth.
Major Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and the Greater Bay Area have emerged as hotspots for equestrian development, hosting prestigious competitions and establishing dedicated equestrian venues. The upcoming National Games in the Greater Bay Area are poised to further amplify the sport’s appeal across the country. A surge in the number of equestrian clubs in China underscores the growing popularity of the sport as a leisure activity and a burgeoning industry.
Despite the strides made in the equestrian scene, challenges persist, including the high cost of training and the need for domestic breeding programs to reduce reliance on imported horses. Moreover, bridging the cultural gap, especially in rural areas where horses are traditionally seen as work animals, remains a priority. By drawing on international equestrian experiences and hosting top-tier events, China aims to showcase its rich equestrian heritage and talent pool on a global platform.
The Jumping World Cup China League, culminating in Chengdu this year, presents a gateway for Chinese riders to qualify for the World Cup Finals and compete alongside elite equestrians from around the world. Equestrian enthusiasts like Luan Shu, vice president of the Beijing Equestrian Association, view these events as catalysts for promoting the sport and nurturing a new generation of riders. The aspiration is to foster a deep-rooted love for equestrianism among the youth and propel China’s equestrian landscape to unprecedented heights.
