Great Britain’s Alec Lochore has been appointed as the cross-country course designer for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. The FEI made this decision during its recent Board Meeting in Switzerland, where Lochore’s credentials and experience were unanimously endorsed. Alongside Lochore, fellow Brit Mike Etherington-Smith will serve as the course advisor for the equestrian events, including para equestrian, to be held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia.
Lochore’s extensive background in eventing design and management includes serving as the Eventing Manager for the London Olympics in 2012. His involvement in overseeing test events and cross-country planning at previous Olympics in London and Tokyo has equipped him well for this significant role at LA28. As a Level 4 FEI course designer, Lochore has also contributed his expertise to renowned events like Burnham Market, Houghton International, Barbury Castle, and Blair Castle in the UK, in addition to his current role at The Event at TerraNova in Florida.
Expressing his excitement, Lochore stated, “Each Olympics is unique and special. The Olympics is the biggest showcase that our sport has, and to be chosen as course designer is very exciting.” FEI President Ingmar De Vos commended the selection, highlighting Lochore’s exceptional track record in eventing course design and organization, emphasizing the importance of creating a challenging yet captivating course for the world’s top equestrians and a global audience.
The upcoming LA28 cross-country course, to be developed in collaboration with Etherington-Smith, is set to undergo planning and construction in the near future. Lochore’s appointment signifies a significant milestone in the preparation and execution of the equestrian events at the Los Angeles Olympics, promising an exciting and competitive course that will test the riders’ skills and showcase the essence of eventing to a worldwide viewership.
