In a recent study of 1,326 horses in the UK, 91% of owners reported that their mounts exhibited some sort of regular behavior problem under saddle. The most prevalent issue was shying, followed by walking off while being mounted and leaning on the bit. Dangerous behaviors like bucking, rearing, and bolting were less common. Encouragingly, 88% of riders had consulted professionals to check their saddle fit, with 61% getting it rechecked annually.
Jochen Schleese, a Certified Master Saddler, emphasized the impact of poorly-fitted saddles on horse performance. Observing a video of a horse galloping on a treadmill revealed how saddles could hinder shoulder movement, prompting Schleese to advocate for a return to traditional saddle-making practices to prevent long-term harm to horses.
Poor saddle fit can cause various signs of discomfort in horses, such as a sore back, ‘hunter’s bump,’ and resistance during riding. Additionally, behavioral cues like pinning ears, tail switching, and bucking can indicate saddle-related issues. Recognizing these signs is crucial for ensuring the horse’s well-being and performance.
Key areas to consider for saddle fit include balance, wither clearance, channel width, and billet alignment. A well-balanced saddle distributes the rider’s weight evenly, preventing discomfort and potential injury to the horse. Wither clearance and channel width are vital to avoid pressure points and allow for proper back movement.
When purchasing a saddle, factors like adjustable tree width and angle, rear-facing tree points, and shoulder relief panels should be considered to accommodate the horse’s anatomy. Tree width should allow for shoulder movement without restricting it, ensuring the horse’s comfort and freedom of motion.
Experts recommend assessing saddle fit regularly and consulting professionals to make necessary adjustments. A properly-fitted saddle not only enhances performance but also safeguards the horse’s well-being by preventing discomfort and potential long-term issues.
Ensuring saddle fit is a fundamental aspect of horse care and riding, influencing both the horse’s performance and overall welfare. By prioritizing proper saddle fit and regular assessments, riders can optimize their horse’s comfort, movement, and behavior under saddle.
