Jenny Nolan, a prominent figure in the equestrian world, passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy cherished by many. Born in Enfield to a non-horsey family, Jenny’s passion for horses blossomed early on, leading her to join the Enfield Chase branch of the Pony Club.
Under the mentorship of Ruth McMullen, Jenny’s equestrian journey began, solidifying her lifelong bond with Dinny Nicholls, later known as Dinny Brooks-Ward. Her involvement with the British Showjumping Association in London marked the start of her event organizing career, culminating in her pivotal role in managing the prestigious Horse of the Year Show alongside Raymond Brooks-Ward.
Marriage to George Nolan brought Jenny to Wadhurst, East Sussex, where they raised their family. Jenny’s active participation in the Eridge Hunt and various equestrian organizations cemented her reputation as a dedicated supporter of the equestrian community.
Her collaboration with George led to the inception of the South of England Horse Trials in 1976, a successful event that continues to thrive. The couple also revitalized the Eridge Horse Trials in 1984, showcasing their passion for equestrian sports.
Not only was Jenny a devoted event organizer, but she was also a loving mother to Tim and Pippa Nolan. Together with Tim, she orchestrated numerous equestrian events in the south-east, playing a pivotal role in Pippa’s illustrious eventing career and accompanying her to major championships around the globe.
Jenny’s impact extended beyond her family, earning her a special place in the hearts of many within the equestrian world. Her warm personality and unwavering support endeared her to all who knew her, leaving a void that will be deeply felt.
Survived by her brother David, daughter Pippa and son Tim, along with their respective families, Jenny Nolan’s legacy will endure through the memories of those she touched and the events she helped shape.
