Dr. Sarah Waxman, a renowned clinical assistant professor at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, wears many hats. Not only is she a boarded large animal surgeon and clinician at the Equine Field Service of the Veterinary Hospital, but she also plays a crucial role as the advisor to Purdue’s Equestrian Team.
Her dedication and leadership in guiding the Equestrian Team did not go unnoticed. At the Purdue Student Life Honors ceremony on April 6, Dr. Waxman was awarded the prestigious Outstanding Advisor of the Year accolade. The award recognized her exceptional commitment to the team, serving as a role model and facilitating the organization’s mission.

Dr. Waxman’s affinity for equestrian sports dates back to her undergraduate days at Kansas State University, where her passion for horses blossomed. After completing a large animal surgery residency at Purdue in 2014, she returned in 2017, initially as a visiting assistant professor and later as a clinical assistant professor in 2021.

When the previous advisor of the Purdue Equestrian Team departed, Dr. Waxman stepped up to the plate, bringing her expertise and meticulous attention to detail to ensure the team’s continued success. Under her guidance, the team, responsible for the care of 13 horses, recently achieved club sport status.
Hailey Hurst, co-captain of the team, commended Dr. Waxman for her unwavering support during challenging times, guiding the team to stability and success. The team’s journey under Dr. Waxman’s mentorship has been transformative, culminating in their elevation to club sport status this year.
Looking ahead, the Purdue Equestrian Team is gearing up to compete at the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) Nationals at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina. As they set their sights on future endeavors, the team will soon transition to a new facility until Purdue’s proposed on-campus equestrian facility comes to fruition.
Dr. Waxman’s tireless efforts and dedication to the Purdue Equestrian Team have not only been recognized with the Outstanding Advisor of the Year award but have also played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the team’s significance within the university community.
As the team continues to flourish under Dr. Waxman’s guidance, her impact extends beyond the arena, fostering a sense of camaraderie, dedication, and excellence among its members. Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Waxman on this well-deserved recognition, and a heartfelt thank you for her invaluable contributions to Purdue’s Equestrian Team.
