The FEI has established the Equestrian Safety Vest Working Group (ESVWG) to enhance athlete protection standards by delving into scientific research and innovative protective equipment. The surge in safety vest usage across various equestrian disciplines has prompted concerns regarding the lack of concrete data supporting their efficacy in reducing athlete injuries.
Headed by Dr. Mark Hart, Chair of the FEI Medical Committee, the Working Group’s primary focus is to investigate thoracic and spinal injuries in equestrian sports. Understanding the occurrence and impact of these injuries and the role safety vests play in mitigating their severity is paramount.
Dr. Hart emphasized the need for comprehensive data on safety equipment effectiveness, particularly in real-world scenarios. Questions surrounding the impact of safety vests on athlete movement and horse behavior underscore the necessity for evidence-based safety solutions.
The ESVWG will operate through two specialized international panels to ensure scientific rigor and stakeholder involvement. The FEI Executive Board has greenlit appointments to the Scientific Panel and the National Federation Advisory Panel of the ESVWG.
The Scientific Panel comprises international experts from diverse fields, including biomechanical engineering, injury modeling, and safety vest manufacturing. Addressing vulnerable body areas during falls, such as the head, neck, and spine, the panel ensures representation across regions and genders.
The National Federation Advisory Panel, comprising members nominated by their federations, will facilitate communication with the equestrian community and coordinate fundraising for research projects.
Collaboration with athletes, manufacturers, and standards organizations is integral to the ESVWG’s mission. By proposing new testing protocols and safer vest designs, the group aims to enhance safety standards and encourage widespread adoption of best practices.
Building on past safety initiatives, including the FEI Helmet Working Group, the ESVWG seeks to leverage findings to improve data collection and injury reporting. Collaboration with stakeholders from related sports like horse racing and motocross will further enrich safety measures.
The ESVWG’s formation marks a significant step towards advancing equestrian safety standards, aligning with the FEI’s commitment to athlete welfare.
