Anush Agarwalla, India’s pioneering equestrian in dressage at the Olympics, made a heartfelt announcement about the retirement of his esteemed partner, Sir Caramello Old, a veteran in the equestrian world at 18 years old. This decision marked the conclusion of a remarkable journey that left an indelible mark on India’s equestrian history, particularly at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The duo, Anush and Sir Caramello, created history as the first Indian rider-horse pair to grace the dressage arena at the prestigious Château de Versailles during the Olympics. Their performance, culminating in a commendable ninth place in the qualifiers with a score of 66.444%, garnered admiration and accolades from fans and experts alike.
In a poignant tribute shared on social media, Anush hailed Sir Caramello as a national hero whose legacy will forever be intertwined with Indian equestrianism. Expressing his gratitude, Anush wished his equine companion a serene retirement filled with the simple joys of life, surrounded by open fields and gentle breezes.
Dressage, a discipline where horse and rider execute a series of intricate movements within a confined arena, requires precision, harmony, and a deep bond between the pair. Sir Caramello’s pivotal role in Anush’s Olympic journey cannot be overstated, as the horse played a crucial part in meeting the Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) during the qualification phase, securing India’s spot in the individual dressage event.
The duo’s last competitive outing together took place at the Hagen a. T. W. Standard Show in Germany in September the previous year, marking the end of an era characterized by dedication, resilience, and a shared pursuit of excellence.
Prior to their Olympic feat, at the Asian Games 2023, Anush partnered with another talented horse, Etro, to clinch a bronze in individual dressage and a gold in team dressage. Etro, an 11-year-old equine athlete, currently stands as Anush’s trusted companion, with the pair recently showcasing their skills at a Grand Prix event in Lier, Belgium.
As the equestrian world bids farewell to the iconic partnership of Anush Agarwalla and Sir Caramello Old, their story serves as a testament to the power of dedication, teamwork, and unwavering passion in the realm of equestrian sports. Their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of equestrians and enthusiasts, embodying the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that defines the timeless allure of the equestrian world.
