The FEI has established the Equestrian Safety Vest Working Group (ESVWG) to enhance athlete safety standards through scientific research and innovation in protective gear. This initiative responds to the increasing use of safety vests in various equestrian disciplines and the need for solid data on their effectiveness in preventing injuries.
Heading the Working Group is Dr. Mark Hart from the USA, who chairs the FEI Medical Committee. The focus of the group is to investigate thoracic and spinal injuries in equestrian sports, analyze the role of safety vests in minimizing injury severity, and address the gaps in understanding the real-world performance of protective equipment.
Dr. Hart emphasized the importance of gathering critical data on injuries during falls, the functionality of safety vests, and their impact on both athletes and horses. The Working Group aims to review existing safety standards, develop enhanced testing methods, and deliver evidence-based safety solutions for riders.
The ESVWG operates through two distinct international panels: the Scientific Panel and the National Federation Advisory Panel. The Scientific Panel comprises experts in biomechanics, injury modeling, medicine, safety gear manufacturing, and international standards, ensuring a comprehensive approach to athlete safety.
The NF Advisory Panel, on the other hand, consists of members nominated by National Federations to engage stakeholders, facilitate communication within the equestrian community, and support fundraising for research projects aimed at improving safety standards.
Collaboration with athletes, manufacturers, and other sports facing similar injury risks is a key aspect of the ESVWG’s strategy. By proposing modifications to safety vest design and testing protocols, the Working Group aims to drive the adoption of best practices and enhance injury data collection and reporting.
Building on the success of previous safety initiatives such as the FEI Helmet Working Group, the ESVWG seeks to leverage its findings to promote safer equestrian practices. By aligning with international standards organizations and key stakeholders, the Working Group aims to advance safety measures in equestrian sports and beyond.
The establishment of the ESVWG marks a significant step towards ensuring the well-being of equestrian athletes and promoting a culture of safety and innovation in the sport. Through collaboration, research, and data-driven insights, the Working Group aims to set new standards for athlete protection and injury prevention in the equestrian world.
