Gascoyne’s future equestrian leaders gathered at the Bidgemia Riding Camp for a week of equine education and camaraderie. Over 30 young riders from the Gascoyne region convened at Bidgemia Station, located 160km east of Carnarvon, in April. Supported by the Racing WA Community Fund, this annual camp aimed to nurture the next generation of riders, ranging from five to 17 years old.
The camp provided a platform for these riders to engage with experienced instructors, enhance their riding skills, and deepen their understanding of horse welfare and safety. Thanks to the Racing WA Community Fund grant, four qualified coaches were on hand to deliver practical horsemanship training tailored to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders.
Jodie McTaggart, President of the Bidgemia Riding Club, emphasized that the camp was more than just about riding. It was a holistic experience focused on knowledge-building, confidence development, fostering friendships, and instilling responsible horsemanship practices that participants could carry forward to their families and equine companions.
Parents and caregivers were actively encouraged to be part of the sessions, engaging in topics that ranged from honing riding techniques to proper horse care and best practices in animal welfare. Ian Edwards, Chief Executive Officer of Racing and Wagering Western Australia, lauded the program for its dedication to promoting equine welfare and responsible horsemanship.
